Sfruttano l&#039;energia sprigionata dalla scissione degli atomi (fissione) per produrre enormi quantit\u00e0 di calore, che viene poi convertito in elettricit\u00e0. Nonostante le preoccupazioni relative alla sicurezza e alla gestione dei rifiuti, le centrali nucleari producono energia con emissioni minime di gas serra e possono funzionare quasi ininterrottamente per lunghi periodi di tempo.<\/p>\n<h2>Principi fondamentali dell&#039;energia nucleare<\/h2>\n<p>Il funzionamento di una centrale nucleare si basa su un processo naturale chiamato fissione nucleare. Durante la fissione, un atomo pesante, solitamente uranio-235 o plutonio-239, viene colpito da un neutrone e si divide in atomi pi\u00f9 piccoli. Questo processo rilascia enormi quantit\u00e0 di energia sotto forma di calore, oltre a ulteriori neutroni che possono causare ulteriori fissioni, creando una reazione a catena autosostenuta.<\/p>\n<h3>La reazione a catena<\/h3>\n<p>Affinch\u00e9 una centrale nucleare funzioni in sicurezza, la reazione a catena deve essere attentamente controllata. Questo si ottiene utilizzando:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>barre di controllo<\/strong>: Realizzato con materiali che assorbono i neutroni, come il boro o il cadmio<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ritardanti<\/strong>: Materiali come l&#039;acqua, l&#039;acqua pesante o la grafite che rallentano i neutroni<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sistemi di raffreddamento<\/strong>: Per rimuovere il calore generato ed evitare il surriscaldamento del nucleo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Le parti principali di una centrale nucleare<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Il reattore<\/h3>\n<p>Il cuore di ogni centrale nucleare \u00e8 il reattore nucleare. \u00c8 la parte in cui avviene la fissione nucleare. \u00c8 costituito da:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nucleo del reattore<\/strong>: Contiene il combustibile nucleare (solitamente uranio arricchito in pellet)<\/li>\n<li><strong>barre di combustibile<\/strong>: Tubi metallici contenenti i pellet di combustibile<\/li>\n<li><strong>barre di controllo<\/strong>: Regolano la velocit\u00e0 della reazione<\/li>\n<li><strong>Refrigerante<\/strong>: Di solito l&#039;acqua circola all&#039;interno del nucleo per assorbire il calore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Il reattore \u00e8 installato all&#039;interno di un recipiente a pressione, realizzato in acciaio spesso diversi centimetri, che resiste ad alte pressioni e temperature.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Il sistema di generazione del vapore<\/h3>\n<p>Il calore generato nel reattore viene trasferito ai generatori di vapore attraverso il refrigerante. Esistono due tipi principali di sistemi:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reattori ad acqua bollente (BWR)<\/strong>: L&#039;acqua bolle direttamente nel nocciolo del reattore e il vapore aziona le turbine<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reattori ad acqua pressurizzata (PWR)<\/strong>: L&#039;acqua nel ciclo primario viene mantenuta ad alta pressione e trasferisce calore ad un circuito secondario, dove viene prodotto vapore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Le turbine e il generatore<\/h3>\n<p>Il vapore ad alta pressione prodotto viene convogliato verso le turbine, che ne determinano la rotazione. Le turbine sono collegate a un generatore che converte l&#039;energia meccanica della rotazione in energia elettrica. Questo processo di conversione \u00e8 simile a quello utilizzato nelle centrali elettriche convenzionali alimentate a carbone o gas naturale.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Il condensatore<\/h3>\n<p>Dopo l&#039;attivazione delle turbine, il vapore a bassa pressione passa attraverso un condensatore, dove viene raffreddato e riconvertito in acqua. Quest&#039;acqua viene pompata nuovamente nei generatori di vapore, riavviando il ciclo. Il raffreddamento avviene solitamente con acqua di lago, fiume o mare, oppure tramite torri di raffreddamento che rilasciano calore nell&#039;aria.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Sistemi di sicurezza<\/h3>\n<p>Gli impianti nucleari dispongono di molteplici sistemi di sicurezza indipendenti per prevenire e rispondere a potenziali incidenti:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>dighe di contenimento multiple<\/strong>: Include il rivestimento delle barre di combustibile, il recipiente a pressione del reattore e l&#039;edificio di contenimento in cemento armato<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sistemi di raffreddamento di emergenza<\/strong>: Fornire un raffreddamento di backup al nucleo in caso di guasto del sistema principale<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sistemi di arresto di emergenza<\/strong>: Possono rapidamente porre fine alla reazione a catena<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generatori di corrente di riserva<\/strong>: Garantire il funzionamento continuo dei sistemi critici anche in caso di interruzione di corrente<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Il ciclo del combustibile nucleare<\/h2>\n<p>Il funzionamento di una centrale nucleare fa parte di un ciclo pi\u00f9 ampio che comprende:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Estrazione e lavorazione dell&#039;uranio<\/h3>\n<p>L&#039;uranio viene estratto dai minerali e poi lavorato per produrre un concentrato noto come &quot;torta gialla&quot;.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Arricchimento<\/h3>\n<p>L&#039;uranio naturale contiene circa 0,71 TP3T dell&#039;isotopo fissile U-235. Per la maggior parte dei reattori, questo viene arricchito a circa 3-51 TP3T di U-235.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Produzione di carburante<\/h3>\n<p>L&#039;uranio arricchito viene convertito in biossido di uranio (UO\u2082) e compresso in pellet, che vengono poi inseriti nelle barre di combustibile.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Utilizzo nel reattore<\/h3>\n<p>Le barre di combustibile vengono posizionate nel nocciolo del reattore, dove rimangono per 3-6 anni, fornendo energia.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Gestione del combustibile esaurito<\/h3>\n<p>Quando il combustibile non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 efficiente, viene rimosso dal reattore.
